Robin Hood junction improvements

by admin on 12 February, 2021

Here is the County Council’s latest update on the works at the Robin Hood junction, showing what work has been taking place, and what’s coming next:

Work taken place in the last week
Northwest Corner – Cherry Hinton Road to Junction with High Street
Complete removal of existing kerbs, channel blocks and bed.
Complete excavation of existing footpath.
Preparation for new kerbs, chambers and ducts in existing footpath.
Southeast Corner – Fulbourn Road to Junction with Queen Edith’s Way
Set up traffic management and pedestrian walkways
Detect and mark out existing services.
Remove vegetation and general site clearance (i.e. street furniture).

Significant Issues:
Failure of the temporary signals – We had an incident this week where the temporary signals locked up. We have since had this fixed and put into place further processes to try and mitigate any further issues. An operative will be on site from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, from Monday 15th February 2021.

Queues have been worse this week due to the works areas required within the junction. This is to be expected to some extent, but we are continually working with the provider to look at further solutions that may help mitigate some of the delays in the area.

We are still working to see how we can accommodate City Fibre ducting within the extent of the scheme, removing the need for them to disturb the junction once works are complete.

Contractor affected by adverse weather conditions. Not in Cambridge, but where the contractor is based in Essex. Batching plants also affected by low temperatures.

Covid-19. Some erratic and inconclusive results were reported following precautionary temperature checks and on-site testing carried out on operatives. This is thought to be caused by inadequate testing conditions including very low temperatures. Each operative was recalled to the office to undertake further Covid-19 testing under more suitable conditions and all results were found to be negative towards Covid-19.

Conflict with existing services – street lighting and virgin media northwest corner.

Work to be completed in the next week

Northwest Corner – Cherry Hinton Road to Junction with High Street

Continue installation of new chambers, sockets and ducts for signals equipment.
Replace kerbing and footpath edgings.
Commence reinstatement of footpaths.
Southeast Corner – Fulbourn Road to Junction with Queen Edith’s Way
Commence excavation of existing kerbs and channel blocks
Commence excavation in existing verge and footpath to formation

Works on programme?
Second gang introduced this week albeit slightly late due to issues described above. Currently a week behind programme, which is to be monitored and reviewed as works progress.

More needs to be done about the failing temporary traffic lights. I spent 25 minutes waiting for a green light this morning. Traffic was backed up all the way down to the Cherry Hinton Tesco express at 7:15 this morning. With 20000 vehicles using this junction each day, better flow is needed. On top of it, drivers being forced to jump the red light from all approaches is eventually going to cause an accident.
