Council road closure delayed

The road closure at Addenbrooke’s, due to begin today, has now been delayed until next Monday, 19th June. The City Deal has put the date back because there are extra underground utilities cables that need to be moved.

The road closure is to facilitate the construction of the next phase of the new cycleway on Hills Road and will involve the closure of the road between Long Road and the Addenbrooke’s roundabout to outbound traffic for approximately 14 weeks . There will be a diversion via Queen Edith’s Way and Fendon Road – see the plan on my previous post. The citybound lane will still be open to traffic.

The City Deal assure us that they will still meet the finish date of early September.

Hills Road cycleways: U-turn on total road closure but no end in sight

The Greater Cambridge City Deal has announced new plans for traffic management on Hills Road to facilitate cycleway construction.

Diversion routes for cycleway works

Having announced in January that they would close the top section of Hills Road entirely for five months, there has been some rowing back following public anger. The road between Long Road and the Addenbrooke’s roundabout will now be closed to outbound traffic for approximately 14 weeks, starting in June. There will be a diversion via Queen Edith’s Way and Fendon Road see right). The citybound lane will still be open to traffic.

The modifications to traffic management are welcome, but the works will still continue to be extremely disruptive to local residents as well as to people visiting the area, including the sixth form colleges and Biomedical Campus.

Outstaying their welcome

When the first phase of the cycleway works started in January 2015, it was scheduled to last 37 weeks. Over 2 years on, Phase I is still unfinished and it seems the Council cannot even organize simple things such as bus stop signs. The City Deal told us the second phase would take 11 weeks from February, but it is now not due to finish till September 2017. (They might like to update their website.

The project is the responsibility of the City Deal but is being managed by the County Cycling Team. They have given us a Q&A, which I can share with you here. FAQs Hills Road June TM

Schools on strike tomorrow

Teachers from the NUT are on strike tomorrow.

The NUT says the strike demands are to increase funding to schools and education, guarantee terms and conditions in all types of schools, and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workload to be addressed.

Is your child’s school open or closed tomorrow? This listing is based on information from the County Council, the Cambridge News and school websites.

Storms close local school

Reception closed next week

Reception closed next week

Last night’s surprise thunderstorms have caused flooding at a number of local schools, including Morley Memorial in Queen Edith’s, where some classrooms have been left without power and with wrecked flooring.

The headteacher, Ms Brown, has written to parents saying,

‘Unfortunately our school has suffered significant flood damage as a result of last night’s storms. We have lost the use of all Reception and year 1 classrooms and also a Year 3 classroom as well as the community room.’

Staff worked through the night to contain the damage and arrange for something close to normal service. Nevertheless, Reception children have had to stay at home today, and will be unable to attend school next week.

Seven other Cambridgeshire schools have been affected. Any further closures will be posted on the County Council website

“Following the rainstorms that hit Cambridgeshire yesterday evening a number of schools and early years settings, mainly in the Cambridge area have been affected by flooding. Cambridgeshire County Council has been liaising with schools to make sure any repairs are carried out as soon as possible. A small number of schools may have to close or partially close but they will stay open if at all possible. Schools and early years facilities will contact parents if they are closing early or if there is any change to their normal routine. The County Council will also be posting any school closures or partial closures on their website: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/closures.

The Met Office had issued no Flood Guidance Statement or Adverse weather warnings to Emergency Responders, so the County was not expecting the thunderstorms. Nevertheless, school closures are hugely regrettable, as although the children will be happy enough to start their holidays early, many working parents will be caught out, with the consequent knock-on effect on the services where they work. Days off school for children also mean days off for nurses, doctors, transport workers – and other teachers.

It will be interesting to know what contingency plans the County has for securing alternative teaching accommodation when the need arises.

Road closures: Marshall Road and Cherry Hinton Road

conesBoth Marshall Road and Cherry Hinton Road will be closed in the near future to enable roadworks to take place.

The County Council will be doing remedial work to the surface dressing in Cherry Hinton Road. This road was only treated last year, but is already in a poor state, so the Council is re-treating it with a better material. The prohibition order provides for the road to be closed at some point between September and March; however, it will not physically be closed for all of that time, only when the work takes place. It is hoped to do it in September, otherwise in the New Year. I will update this post when we have more information.

Marshall Road is being closed because the sewer is structurally unsound and Anglian Water is going to insert a liner pipe. The work will be done between 9 and 5 on 17th September. They will be able to use existing manholes but the road needs to be closed because the sewers are in the middle of the road.

Anglian Water say the work is to the surface water sewer not the foul water one, and assure me that there should be no chemical smells. You should be able to use your water as normal.

Here is the traffic regulation order: road closures

Are you ready for the Tour de France?

le-tour-riders2012In less than seven weeks, the Tour de France comes to Cambridge on Monday July 7th. All very exciting for those who follow competitive cycling – but even if you’re not a fan, have you thought about how you’ll get out about that day?

There are several road closures that day, including Hills Road and Trumpington Road, and many schools are closed for the day, including Morley Memorial, Netherhall, St Bede’s and Coleridge. Schools are announcing changes as I write, so I will update this page as I receive new information. (more…)

A11 trunk road closure

conesNext Monday, September 2, the Highways Agency will be carrying out overnight repairs to the A11 Trunk Road between Junction 36 of the A14 and Fulbourn and the road will be closed on one side. The works will involve patching to worn out sections of the carriageway and refreshing road markings.

The works are scheduled to start on the evening of Monday 2 September. The working hours will be between 8.00pm and 6.00am, Monday – Friday nights.

The southbound carriageway will be closed between 2 September and 4 September inclusive and the northbound carriageway will be closed between 9 September and 12 September inclusive.

A signed diversion route will be in place for traffic wishing to travel on the A11.

Through traffic wishing to travel southbound on the A11 will be diverted to carry on the A14 westbound to join the M11 southbound at Junction 31 (Girton Interchange). Traffic wishing to return to the A11 will need to continue to junction 10 (Duxford) on to the A505 eastbound to re-join the A11 northbound.

Through traffic wishing to travel northbound on the A11 will be diverted to carry on the M11 northbound to join the A14 eastbound at Junction 31 (Girton) and continue on the A14. Traffic wishing to return to the A11 will need to continue to junction 37 to return on the A14 westbound to rejoin the A11 southbound.

There will be signed diversions signed for local traffic. Access will be maintained at all times for Emergency Services.

The contractors, Carillon, will do their best to do the work as quickly as possible, but allow extra time for your journey of ir possible, go a different way.

Any queries, contact CarillionWSP on 01767 684633 between 9am and 4.30pm or their Customer Care department at [email protected], or the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000.

Mowbray Road resurfacing work and closure rescheduled for SUNDAY

Despite informing us that the road closure and resurfacing would take place yesterday (Thursday), the County Council have this morning said that the work will now take place on Sunday 7th July. This is due to administrative errors and failure to take into account other works taking place in the area.

To recap, the County will be carrying out surface dressing of Mowbray Road. Their contractors did some preparatory work in June, and they now need to carry out the second stage, overlaying the road surface with a plymer-modified bitumen and covering it with aggregate or chippings. This is to seal the surface to keep water out and improve the road’s ability to stand up to its heavy usage.

There will be people at the end of the road to give access to properties for residents and businesses, though it won’t be immediate and you may have to wait a bit.  Other traffic will have a signed diversion: Cherry Hinton Road, A1307 Hills Road and A1134 Queen Edith’s Way and vice versa. Cyclists will be able to wheel their bikes along the pavement.

Also scheduled for repairs are Babraham Road and Cherry Hinton Road. Hills Road will be resurfaced in August.

ADVANCE WARNING: Mowbray Road: closed for maintenance this Thursday

road-closureMany people will have noticed the signs advising a road closure in Mowbray Road. This is so that the County Council can carry out surface dressing of the road. Their contractors did some preparatory work a couple of weeks ago, and this week they plan to carry out the second stage, overlaying the road surface with a plymer-modified bitumen and covering it with aggregate or chippings. This is to seal the surface to keep water out and improve the road’s ability to stand up to its heavy usage.

The County Council plans to close Mowbray Road to through traffic between 9.30am and 3.30pm on 4th July. If the weather is good, that will be the only day the road is closed; if it rains, things will take longer. Here’s the weather forecast for Thursday.

There will be people at the end of the road to give access to properties for residents and businesses, though it won’t be immediate and you may have to wait a bit. Buses will also have access. Other traffic will have a signed diversion: Cherry Hinton Road, A1307 Hills Road and A1134 Queen Edith’s Way and vice versa. Cyclists will be able to wheel their bikes along the pavement.

Some people have raised concerns about bin collections. I have been in touch with the City Council and they assure me that they will collect the bins the next day if necessary.

Also scheduled for repairs are Babraham Road and Cherry Hinton Road. Hills Road will be resurfaced in August.
