Drinking up time at the Queen Edith?

by admin on 2 September, 2010

Councillors at the pubCambridge City Council has received a planning application on behalf of Punch Taverns (10/0815/FUL) to demolish the Queen Edith Pub (the only pub in the Queen Ediths ward) on Wulfstan Way and replace it with eight 4-bedroomed houses. I think this was a surprise to everyone.

Contrary to some suggestions, the City Council does not own the pub or the land on which it stands, only the forecourt — although it does own the shops on Wulfstan Way and much of the housing.

You can view the application here and make comments on the proposals, which will be taken into account by the Council. Please explain your reasons why you like/ dislike the proposals – e.g. the importance of the pub to the community and its needs, how the proposed new houses fit into the existing layout, any possible impact on neighbours such as overlooking, etc. Councillors have to follow national guidance when deciding whether or not to approve the application. as well as the Cambridge Local Plan, so you might like to look at that when making your comments.

If you would like to discuss the application and what factors will be taken into consideration in the decision on whether or not to grant planning permission, please get in touch with me or one of the other councillors. We would very much like to hear what you have to say about this. Please understand that because we will be taking the decision, we cannot commit ourselves one way or the other until the meeting itself, as we have to keep an open mind till we have heard all the arguments.

The application is likely to be determined by city councillors at the South Area Committee, which at present meets at Homerton College every two months. The pub decision will not be taken at the meeting next Thursday (9th Sept) because the Council is still  consulting on the plans but later in the year). Members of the public can speak at this meeting, either by way of a public question, petition or a statement about a planning application. We will, however, be discussing the improvement plans for the shops on Wulfstan Way, so you may find it interesting anyway. See my previous post for details.

The Cambridge News is now covering the story here .

  1. Astrid Gruszecki says:

    dear sir or madam,
i am writing to oppose the demolition of The Quenn Edith Pub to replace it with eight new dwellings. I have been working at The Queen Edith Pub for around 4 months now. I believe there are too many negative reasons to demolish such a pub. For example; This pub has been in our community for many decades. Before the landlord Paul took over the pub it was very run down, dirty an many of the customers consumed drugs within the premises. Paul has spent all his savings and earning into improving this pub for the locals. this is very noticable from the outside as well as inside. Paul has also spent money on his kitchen to enable this pub to serve traditional meals in which our local customers enjoy and eat regularly.
As a staff member here i have made a close connection with the local people who use this pub. This matter is in daily conversation and is not approved by any residents. Many of the user of the pub are elderly or disabled, these are are valued customers that come and enjoy the pub socially. demolishing this pub will deprive these resident of their socail activities and meetings for friends.
There is also a new estate that is being built on the old Netherhall School site, when completed this could bring more customers to use the Queen Edith. We are also located near addenbrookes and have had a noticable increase of the staff from the hospital comming to the pub during lunchtimes for meals.
Demolishing this pub will deprive many elderly locals of the thing they enjoy doing. it will also be a HUGE loss to our community. The landlord will not only loose his buisness, he and his family will loose their house and all the money and hard work they have put in to improve this pub. So i urge you, please reconsider this decision and listen to the local people!!

  2. Astrid, thanks for commenting. Your comments about many of the customers being elderly or disabled are particularly interesting — I assume you mean that they need a pub within easy walking distance.

It is the brewery that owns the pub, Punch Taverns, that has applied for planning permission and the City Council that has the difficult job of approving it or throwing it out.

It is possible I may be one of the councillors deciding on it, so I and the other city councillors have to remain neutral until I have heard all the arguments at the meeting (otherwise we would not be allowed to vote, and I certainly want to vote). I am listening very carefully to everything everyone says.

Our county councillor, Geoff Heathcock, is not involved in the decision and freer to speak his mind, so I am going to forward your comments to him.

Have you sent your objections to the City Council as well as commented here?
