Cambridge goes Tory-free as Coleridge councillor quits

by admin on 17 September, 2010

But as one election campaign drew to a close yesterday, another began. Just as we were all about to put away our rosettes and clipboards, Cambridge City Council’s lone Tory, Chris Howell handed in his notice. The word in the Lib Dem committee room last night is that it was due to pressure of work but I see he’s told the local press he’s fed up with it all.

Party politics aside, I would like to acknowledge his hard work as a local councillor. His vigorous support of cycling was always very refreshing — not what you usually expect from a Tory. Cyclists on the Hills Road bridge have cause to thank him, as he led the calls for speed cameras and signs warning motorists not to overtake cyclists on the narrow lanes during the never-ending roadworks. Good luck, Chris.

And for those of us still in the political fray, heigh-ho, there’s another bye-election. Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more!

I am sure your generous acknowledgement of Chris’s work will be appreciated.

But you needn’t worry as his Tory replacement is also pro-cycling. I’m not sure why you make the negative correlation though – haven’t you heard of the Boris bikes etc. in London?

  2. I do know about the London Bike scheme as I and another city councillor was invited to a fascinating presentation on the plans a year or so ago. The project was started by Ken Livingtstone when he was mayor of London — but it’s obviously great that Boris Johnson picked up the baton!

I haven’t seen any in action yet — have you?
